Botulinum toxin (BoNT-A) is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. The toxin used for treatment is highly purified, and manufactured under very strict regulations. It works by temporarily blocking a chemical signal to the muscle to move. It is injected in small amounts using a fine needle to soften lines and wrinkles, by relaxing the muscles controlling skin movements. The overall result is a more rested, smoother look, while maintaining facial expression. Xeomin® is the brand of Botulinum Toxin that Face Up uses in clinic.
The most common areas are the “frown-lines”, the forehead and “crow’s feet”. There is also the option to reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) & relax various overactive muscles of the lower face.
Treatment starts with a holistic consultation, identifying your areas of concern and discussing your expectations. The injections can cause some discomfort, which will only last a few seconds. Common side effects which are temporay and minor include bruising, swelling and redness. The effects will usually be visible after 5-7 days and last for up to 3-5 months. There are no serious or long term side effects.
Contraindications: Botulinum toxin should not be used in pregnancy or when breastfeeding. Certain neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease or myastheniagravis.
